Shockwave Therapy

Non-invasive acoustic wave therapy, given in our office.

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that sends acoustic pressure waves through the skin into the painful area.

Commonly used for

  • Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
  • Tendon pain, such as Achilles tendon pain

How it works

A handheld applicator is placed on the skin over the painful area, with a thin layer of gel. It delivers rapid pulses of acoustic pressure waves into the tissue.

What to expect

  • First step: shockwave therapy is for established patients, so it starts with a consultation.
  • Often paired with laser: shockwave is often combined with Class IV laser therapy in the same visit.
  • During a session: you’ll feel quick tapping pulses over the treated area, with the intensity adjusted to your comfort.
  • Afterward: most patients return to their usual activities the same day. The area may feel tender for a day or two.
  • How many sessions: it varies from person to person, depending on your symptoms and diagnosis, and is discussed at your visit.

Before your treatment

Tell us if you’re pregnant, take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, or have an infection, open wound or tumor near the treatment area.
